40,200 people died in traffic accidents in 2016.
35,092 people died in traffic accidents in 2015.
According to the National Safety Council, 2015 saw the largest percentage rise in motor vehicle deaths in the past 50 years. In 2016, the number of motor vehicle related deaths increased by 6% over the 2015 number of fatalities.
Traffic accident fatalities are on the rise. Every 12 minutes someone dies in a car accident, every 10 seconds an injury occurs.
Fatalities on Nebraska Roadways
In 2015, 246 people died in traffic accidents on Nebraska roadways. This was a 9% increase over our state’s fatalities in 2014.
More Fatal Traffic Accidents Despite Better Automobile Safety Features
Over the past several years car manufacturers have offered major advances in safety features, like automatic braking, lane assist systems, and standard side-curtain airbags. With all of these enhanced safety features in our cars, you would think traffic accident fatalities would decrease even if the number of accidents remained constant or even increased.
Researchers are exploring the possible reasons why more fatalities are occurring on the road. One suspected cause is that people are spending more time behind the wheel, increasing the odds of being in an accident. The National Safety Council stated: “With continued lower gasoline prices and an improving economy resulting in an estimated 3% increase in motor-vehicle mileage[.]”
However, total vehicle miles traveled increased from 3.1 trillion in 2015, to 3.2 trillion in 2016, which represents a smaller percentage increase than the increase in traffic related fatalities. Safety experts and advocates point to numerous reasons for the increase in traffic accident fatalities.
Causes of Fatal Traffic Accidents
Even if certain new factors are contributing to the rise in traffic accident fatalities, the causes for fatal crashes tend to be roughly the same from year to year. The leading causes of fatal car accidents are:
- Alcohol-Impaired Driving
- Drowsy Driving
- Distracted Driving
- Speeding, Disobeying Traffic Signals, Unsafe Driving
- Human Error
Regardless of the causes, the fact remains that annual traffic accident fatalities are on the rise. We are all a little more at risk every time we slide behind the wheel.
